Joshua Chant is the founder and head coach of Onboard Yacht Coach, delivering primarily private, onboard coaching for yacht owners looking to extend their skills and broaden their horizons. With decades of experience in both high-level sailing and structured coaching, Joshua is genuinely rare in his ability to combine deep practical knowledge with a calm, effective teaching style.

His sailing credentials span both ocean cruising and competitive racing. Joshua has competed in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race as Navigator and Team Leader, and founded and managed 33 South Racing — Australia's only team in the Extreme Sailing Series. That experience across one-design and ocean racing gives him a breadth of knowledge he draws on directly in every coaching session.

As a coach, Joshua spent years as Head Coach at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, one of Australia's most respected sailing clubs, and holds a full suite of Australian Sailing qualifications including Keelboat Racing Instructor and Sailing Coach. He also holds a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies, which underpins his ability to communicate complex skills clearly and structure lessons that build confidence steadily and effectively. He is known for creating calm, supportive environments where clients improve quickly and without feeling overwhelmed.

Coaching is conducted on your vessel, in real conditions, and is tailored entirely to your goals — whether that means getting in and out of the dock comfortably, handling your boat shorthanded, preparing for an ocean passage, or racing more competitively. Common training areas include anchoring, mooring, dock handling, sail handling and safety procedures, navigation, weather forecasting and routing, and race starting and tactics.

Joshua is also an accredited Discover Sailing course provider, delivering structured Australian Sailing courses through a number of accredited yacht clubs in Sydney.
